Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin which occurs naturally in several foods. Good sources of vitamin E include almonds, raw seeds, dark green vegetables like spinach, kale and Swiss chard, avocado, broccoli and papaya. Eggs, meat, poultry, vegetable oils and wheat germ oil are also good sources of vitamin E.

Vitamin E is an important nutrient and has several functions in the body. Several enzymes require vitamin E for their normal function. Vitamin E also acts as an antioxidant and protects cells from the action of free radicals that can cause aging, heart disease and cancer. Vitamin E also plays an important role in many neurological processes. Vitamin E helps with immune function as well as the production of red blood cells.

Forms of vitamin E

There are eight different forms of Vitamin E including alpha, beta, gamma and delta tocopherol / tocopheryl, and alpha, beta, gamma and delta tocotrienol. Of the eight forms of vitamin E only alpha tocopheryl is used by the body and is present in much higher quantities as compared to the rest. Only alpha tocopheryl is taken into consideration when studying the effects of vitamin E on the body.

Alpha tocopheryl also exits in different forms. The two main forms are naturally occurring alpha tocopheryl and synthetically prepared alpha tocopheryl. Natural alpha tocopheryl is denoted as d-alpha tocopheryl while the synthetic form is denoted as dl-alpha tocopheryl.

Alpha tocopheryl that has the suffixes acetate or succinate is the ester form of vitamin E. The ester is formed by adding an alcohol to the molecular structure of vitamin E. The addition of the alcohol helps to stabilize vitamin E and increase its shelf life without affecting the way the body absorbs it.

The natural forms of vitamin E including d-alpha tocopherol / tocopheryl, d-alpha tocopheryl acetate and d-alpha tocopheryl succinate are preferred by the body as they are more easily assimilated. On the other hand the synthetic forms like dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate and dl-alpha tocopheryl succinate are less bio-available to the body.

Recommended dosage of vitamin E

The recommended daily allowance of vitamin E is 15mg per day for normal activities. In cases where vitamin E is taken for therapeutic reasons the dose should not exceed 1000mg per day. Vitamin E supplements are not recommended for people taking anticoagulants like warfarin and aspirin or any anti-psychotic drugs. Pregnant women should only take a vitamin E supplement on prescription from their doctor.
