Vitamin B2 or Riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin that is part of the B complex. Riboflavin functions as a coenzyme responsible for the breaking down of carbohydrates, proteins and fats during digestion. It also helps the body absorb and assimilate these nutrients. The role of riboflavin in digestion is crucial for energy production of the body.

Riboflavin plays a role in the generation of cellular energy through the electron transport chain. It also helps the body to absorb iron to produce hemoglobin. The recommended daily allowances (RDA) of vitamin B2 for babies is 0.3 to 0.4mg/day, from children from 1 to 13 years it is 0.5 to 0.9mg /day, and for 14 years and over it is 1.1mg/day for women and 1.3mg/day for men. A deficiency in riboflavin also called ariboflavinosis causes a condition called stomatitis.

Symptoms of stomatitis include a sore throat, inflammation of the mouth and tongue, irritation and sensitivity in the eyes, and scaly rashes on some parts of the body. A riboflavin deficiency can also cause anemia. Vitamin B2 deficiency in pregnant women can lead to birth defects in the fetus like limb deformities and heart conditions.

Treatment of vitamin B2 deficiency

Vitamin B2 or Riboflavin deficiency can be treated with the help of multivitamin or B complex supplements. The deficiency can also be treated by eating foods rich in riboflavin. Pregnant women are usually prescribed a supplement of B complex if there is a possibility of a deficiency during the pregnancy.
