Methionine, the essential amino acid that strengthens skin, hair and nails
October 15, 2018

There are nine essential amino acids present in food that is required by humans. Methionine is one of them. It benefits cell function by producing molecules inside the body that regulate the same. It also enables protein production. It strengthens your skin, hair, and nails and prevents fat from building up in the liver. It can be used to treat viral infections and liver disorders. It is commonly found in dairy products, meat, and fish.

It can be converted into sulfur-containing molecules which help protect tissue and modify DNA. Only amino acids which contain sulfur can build these molecules. Methionine and Cysteine are the only molecules in our body that have this property. The body can produce Cysteine of its own, but Methionine needs to be consumed. Methionine encourages the formation of new protein in your cells as the older lot gets damaged. It also functions as an antioxidant in order to safeguard damaged tissues.

Methionine Functions

Methionine helps produce Cysteine which is used to create protein, taurine, and glutathione. Taurine helps maintain your overall health. Glutathione plays a major role in protein and DNA production as well as metabolizing nutrients inside your body. Methionine can also convert itself into S-adenosylmethionine, i.e., "SAM" which in turn produces creatine, crucial for cellular energy.

It is effective against Acetaminophen poisoning. When ingested, methionine stops products that go into acetaminophen from breaking down and harming the liver. For treatment to be effective, it should begin before 10 hours have transpired from the acetaminophane poisoning.

Other benefits that have been hinted at are:

  • Prevention of neural tube birth defects in mothers
  • Lowers risk of breast and colon cancer
  • Taking a regular dose of methionine for 6 months helps prevent symptoms of Parkinson's.
  • It is supposed to help with asthma, depression, and alcoholism.

Side-effects
While methionine is considered to be safe as long as it is taken by mouth in amounts commonly present in food, it should only be injected under the expert supervision of a trained medical professional. The amount administered should never cross the amount naturally found in food. It is thought to cause heartburn, headaches, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea in some people.

Methionine can worsen existing liver disease. It is harmful to schizophrenics as it can aggravate their delirium, disorientation, and confusion.
