Tech Review: 3 Mobile Apps for Getting a Good Night's Sleep
March 12, 2018

Insomnia is a common problem that can leave you feeling washed out and drowsy. Chronic lack of sleep can even lead to serious health problems, mood swings and reduce your ability to manage stress. While sleeping pills can provide short-term relief, they are not a long-term solution. Recently, several mobile apps have been developed to help insomniacs find long-term relief from sleepless nights.

Sleep Cycle
Chronic insomnia is often caused or made worse by erratic sleep patterns. Sleep Cycle is a free app that analyses your sleep patterns and triggers its intelligent alarm clock to wake you during your lightest sleep phase, leaving you feeling more alert and refreshed. Simply place the phone by your bed and the app will gather information, such as your movements and any snoring, while you sleep.

You can also add personal notes to see how your lifestyle affects your sleep patterns. For example, you can record the amount of caffeine you drink throughout the day and note down any food you've eaten close to bedtime. The app provides charts and graphs to help you analyze and make adjustments to your sleep patterns. While Sleep Cycle is not a quick fix for insomnia, it's extremely useful for cultivating healthy sleep habits and beating chronic sleeplessness.

Sleep Well Hypnosis
Sleep Well Hypnosis is useful for both occasional and chronic insomnia, as it uses guided relaxation and calming sounds to help promote restful sleep. The app contains an audio hypnosis session you can use every night to prepare your body and mind for sleep.

Sleep Well Hypnosis comes with nature sounds, soothing music and other background noise that can be played on a loop throughout the night. There is also a Sleep Booster, which uses binaural beats to promote deep sleep. The app is free to use, but some advanced features can only be used when buying in-app purchases.

Sleepo
Sleepo is a popular app that allows you to create sound mixes to help you fall asleep. Nature sounds, such as animals, rain and thunder, can be combined to create customised soundtracks. You can also use other sounds, including white noise, musical instruments and even city noises. Customised soundtracks can be saved and played on a loop or used with the built-in timer. The basic version of Sleepo is free, but there are also in-app purchases available for extra sounds.

Chronic insomnia can have a negative impact on your health, but there are several apps that can help you to get a good night's sleep. Sleep Cycle, Sleep Well Hypnosis and Sleepo are three of the top apps available for insomniacs.
