The human body requires calcium for healthy bones and teeth. 99% of the calcium in the body is utilized for the growth and maintenance of the skeleton and teeth. But calcium also has other important roles which include nerve function, muscle contractions, cell signaling, activation of certain enzymes, and blood clotting. Although only 1% of calcium is used for all these other functions, they are crucial for overall health, and a calcium deficiency could affect a number of biological systems.

The types of calcium

When taken as supplement calcium is in three common forms. These forms include calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, and calcium amino acid chelate.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3): Calcium carbonate has always been the form of calcium widely used in supplements. Calcium carbonate occurs naturally in substances like egg shells, limestone, rocks, pearls, corals, and the shells of marine animals like oysters. The elemental calcium present in calcium carbonate is 40% of the total compound. While this value is relatively high, calcium has low water solubility which makes it harder for the body to absorb. Owing to the low bio-availability of calcium in CaCO3 newer supplements have been developed that use different forms of calcium.

Calcium citrate (Ca3(C6H5O7)2): Calcium citrate is a salt of calcium and citric acid. Calcium citrate is broken down easily by stomach acids and is, therefore, more bio-available for absorption by the body. Calcium citrate is preferred in the treatment of conditions like osteoporosis or hypoparathyroidism and as a supplement for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers who require the extra calcium. However, the amount of elemental calcium present in a unit of calcium citrate is only 20%.

Calcium amino acid chelate: A calcium amino acid chelate is a form of calcium that has been bonded to an amino acid using a process call chelation. Because amino acids occur naturally in the body, a calcium amino acid chelate converts calcium to an organic form that is more easily absorbed by the body than the other forms. The percentage of elemental calcium in calcium amino acid chelates is lower than the other two forms and is only 9-13%.

Uses of calcium supplements

A calcium deficiency can lead to several problems including irregular heartbeats, eye damage, and osteoporosis. If the body does not receive enough calcium, it takes calcium from the bones for the other functions resulting in weak bones. Calcium supplements are used to treat calcium deficiencies, and for the extra calcium intake required by expectant and breastfeeding mothers. People who cannot absorb calcium from their food also require calcium supplements.
