Turmeric has been historically known to act as a natural antiseptic and a source of antioxidant. Turmeric is basically a spice that is native to south-east Asia and is particularly involved in Indian Cuisines. Turmeric is made from the rhizome / roots of the Curcuma longa and has been used as a major ingredient in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine since the ancient times.

India is the primary supplier of turmeric to the entire world with about 80% of all the turmeric being sourced from this country. The major component in Turmeric is curcumin which provides the characteristic yellow colour to this spice. Curcumin has natural anti-inflammatory and immunity-enhancing characteristics.

Why include turmeric in daily diet?

There are numerous advantages of including turmeric in your diet. Since curcumin is not readily available in natural sources, the body doesn't find it easy to acquire and assimilate curcumin. This is why turmeric should be included in the diet. Some of the various ways in which turmeric is taken involves, adding it as spices in food and making turmeric tea out of the spice. Turmeric tea is made by adding ground turmeric in boiling water. The tea has a strong taste and sharp flavor coming from the spice. A typical dosage of turmeric revolves around 400 to 600 mg taken thrice a day or one gram of the spice being added while cooking. Some of the various advantages of including turmeric in daily diet are mentioned below.

  • Due to the anti-inflammatory nature of the spice, turmeric plays a significant role in reducing the symptoms of arthritis. A study conducted in 2016 found that about 206 American adults with rheumatoid arthritis used non-vitamin supplements to manage their symptoms with turmeric being the dominant product.
  • Curcumin has numerous immunity boosting characteristics. It is a natural antioxidant and an antibacterial, antiviral and a natural anti-inflammatory substance. It has shown the ability to regulate the production of white blood cells and even help in fighting or preventing cancer. It also helps in maintaining cardiovascular health.
One of the most widely known advantages of having curcumin is its properties against cancer. Curcumin reduces the risk of cell damage and even prevents cell mutation which is caused by cancer. Turmeric has also shown action against tumors and prevents or stops their growth. There are over 2000 medical papers demonstrating the effect of turmeric on cancer.
