Vitamin B5, also known as Pantothenic acid is a water-soluble vitamin that occurs naturally in all the living cells in the body. The B5 vitamin plays a significant role in body-metabolism and absorption of nutrients.

Recent studies have revealed numerous functions of vitamin B5 such as managing blood sugar levels, controlling bad cholesterol, reducing high blood pressure and protection against nerve damage and heart failure. It plays a critical role in the creation of hormones, fats and carbohydrates that we consume.

Vitamin B5 helps in the synthesis of neural-energy that drives the neurotransmitters in the human brain. The neurotransmitters are responsible for transmitting brain signals and help in coordinating mental activities. Hence, vitamin B5 is important in maintaining a healthy nervous system. Apart from this, B5 vitamin helps in the maintaining healthy red blood cells and digestive tract. It maintains regular hormonal levels and regulates the functioning of adrenal glands.

It can be seen that vitamin B5 is critical to maintaining a healthy life. Thankfully a lot of our common food items are rich in vitamin B5 such as whole meats, eggs, legumes, seeds, nuts, beans and milk. It is also found in alcohol in the form of provitamin panthenol and calcium pantothenate.

Deficiency of B5 vitamin
Cases of vitamin B5 deficiency are extremely rare and have been caused primarily by starvation. Some of the common symptoms of vitamin B5 deficiency include fatigue, vomiting, muscle cramps, impaired vision, stomach aches, insomnia, depression, irritability and apathy. Certain neurological symptoms also creep in due to the lack of Acetylcholine such as numbness and paresthesia. Prolonged deficiencies can result in hypoglycemia due to an increase in insulin tolerance.

D calcium pantothenate
D calcium pantothenate is an artificial form of vitamin B5 that is manufactured from pantothenic acid. T usually comes in the form of supplement-pills and can be taken for a variety of conditions. Doctors often prescribe D calcium pantothenate as a cure for morning sickness, acne and pains related to rheumatoid arthritis.

There are no notable side-effects of pantothenic acid or its derivatives. Over-consumption of one kind of vitamin B might result in the imbalance of the other vitamin Bs in the body. Excessive consumption of vitamin B5 can hamper the effectiveness of certain antibiotics like tetracycline and of Alzheimer's medication. Even though it is practically harmless, it is advised to consult a doctor when thinking of taking B5 aggressively.
