Schizandra berry also called Schisandra berry or Schisandra Chinensis is a small red berry that grows on a creeping vine. The berry which is native to China has been used as food and medicine by the locals for centuries. The local name Wu Wei Zi translates as five flavored berry and was acquired because of its sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent taste. The berries are rarely eaten in food anymore because of their odd taste. As part of ancient Chinese medicine, schizandra berry was used to treat asthma, dry cough, fatigue, and chronic diarrhea. It was also found to boost liver function.

Nutrient Content of Schizandra Berry
Schizandra berry has been found to be rich in Lignans, like flax and sesame seed, which are made up of two phenylpropanoids (phenylpropanoids are a family of organic compounds). Over thirty lignans have been isolated from schizandra extract and studies have shown that they are extremely effective as anti-oxidants and in neutralizing toxins. The protective effect schizandra has on the liver is because it can neutralize carbon tetrachloride and galactosamine which damage liver cells.

Uses of Schizandra Berry
Because of its protective effects on the liver, schizandra berry has been used to treat hepatitis and liver damage. Carbon tetrachloride is a carcinogen that causes liver cancer which can be prevented and controlled with the help of schizandra berry.

Schizandra berry has also been found to treat adrenal fatigue and a number of disorders related to it including kidney function and depression.

As an anti-oxidant schizandra berry reduces inflammation and helps to control heart disease. The berry also has anti-aging properties.

Research on schizandra berry extract showed that the berry had adaptogen properties and boosts the body's immune system. These adaptogen properties help the body to fight several diseases. One of the most promising results of schizandra research is its ability to counter the effects of adriamycin. Adriamycin is a type of chemotherapy used to kill cancer cells. However, once the cancer cells have been killed off the drug remains in the body and has several side effects.

Adriamycin decreases cardio activity, causes liver congestion, and fluid retention in the abdominal cavity. Treatment with schizandra was found to reduce cardio-toxicity caused by adriamycin and improve cardio function.

Schizandra berry can be consumed as a herbal tea preparation or in juices. The dried berries are also crushed and used in commercial supplement preparations.

Do not use schizandra berry if you are pregnant as this can stimulate contractions. The berry is sometimes used to induce labor when the mother is past her due date. People with high blood pressure and epilepsy are advised to not use schizandra berry as well.
