Choline Bitartrate, What Athletes and Alcoholics have in Common

Choline is a water-soluble substance that is required by the body for several important functions. Choline is similar to the compounds in the vitamin B complex and is sometimes included with them. Some of the functions of choline in the human body include brain and nervous system development and function, liver function, metabolism, and muscle function. Without choline, these systems would not be able to function normally leading to disease.

Egg yolks and beef liver are two of the richest sources of choline. Other foods rich in choline include broccoli, cauliflower, salmon, cod, and chicken liver among others. It is recommended that adult males consume around 550mg of choline daily while adult females require 425mg. Pregnant women require 450mg while breastfeeding mothers require 550mg.

Choline deficiency

Choline deficiencies do not occur very often, but there are some groups of people who are at a higher risk than others. Postmenopausal women, pregnant women, athletes, and alcoholics all have a higher risk of suffering from a choline deficiency.

The symptoms of a choline deficiency include:

  • Impaired brain development in fetuses.
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver where fat accumulates in the liver and disrupts functions.
  • Kidney disease.
  • Short-term memory loss.
  • Fatigue.
  • Mood Swings.

Treatment of choline deficiency

Choline deficiencies are treated with a choline supplement called Choline Bitartrate. The supplement is a salt of choline and bitartrate and can be made into tablets or capsules. When used as a supplement the recommended dosage of choline bitartrate is 650mg to 2gms per day. However, it is advisable to only take choline bitartrate when prescribed by a registered medical practitioner and to stick to the dose on the prescription.

Choline bitartrate not only treats the diseases caused by choline deficiency but helps in other areas of health as well. Choline bitartrate intake has been found to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women and decrease the risks of neural tube defects in developing fetuses.

Choline Bitartrate Side effects

Although choline bitartrate has many benefits, taking too much of the supplement can have side effects. Excess choline intake can affect the digestive tract causing stomach aches, diarrhea and vomiting. One research study found a link between higher choline intake and increased risks of prostate cancer in men. Other symptoms of a choline overdose are excessive sweating, bad body odor and lowered blood pressure. The upper limit for choline bitartrate intake for adults has been fixed at 3,500mg per day. As long as this limit is met choline bitartrate is safe for consumption.
